The Coach
Chelsea Banbury
VCU’s 14th head coach, hired March 31, 2026. Seven seasons as a head coach, seven winning records.
At High Point she went 140–79 and won four Big South regular-season titles, three tournament titles and two Coach of the Year awards. Three of her teams reached the NCAA Tournament. Her last one went 27–6. She has never had a losing season as a head coach.
That 27–6 team led the Big South in assists, field goal percentage, blocks, scoring defense and scoring margin. It ranked 34th in the country in field goal percentage defense. For VCU she has named the identity she wants: effort, discipline, “we over me,” and a relentless man-to-man defense.
Before High Point she was at Florida Gulf Coast. She played point guard there, earned a finance degree and an MBA, and spent 11 seasons on Karl Smesko’s staff, the last five as associate head coach.
